Memorial Day In The USA
26 May 2025: Memorial Day in The USA
Memorial Day is, for the most part, a tres, tres affaire sérieuse here in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave and as such, we’ve taken the day off in honor of those we are memorializing.
There is only one place I’d rather be today and that’s on the beaches of Normandy where the French celebrate this day with more fervor than most Americans. Flags, parades, salutes and somber moments of silence for those we’ve lost. And most Americans can’t get through the day there without repeated slaps on the back, warm embraces and a continuous stream of “merci”.
Since 1998, I’ve had the great good fortune to spend six or seven American Memorial Days and D-Days on those beaches and among those French who witnessed the events as well as the next generation, the members of which understand the significance of what occurred in June 1944 and that nearly ten thousand of those we’re memorializing lie in the cemetery above those beaches. In all my time there, as soon as a opened my mouth, I’ve rarely had to pay for a drink.
So, no business today, friends. Rather, a toast to the men and women who answered the call from 1776 to present as we pause to remember them and strive to “live your life worthy of the sacrifices that made it possible”.
